This intricate yet surprisingly simple project is perfect for crafters of all ages and skill levels. It’s a wonderful activity to do with family and friends, and the result is a beautiful, unique decoration that you can display with pride. This blog post provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to creating a stunning origami Christmas tree that will add a touch of elegance and whimsy to your festive decor.

Why Choose Origami for Your Christmas Decorations?

Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, is an incredibly versatile craft. It requires minimal materials – just paper! – and offers endless possibilities for creating beautiful and intricate designs. Here are a few reasons why origami is an excellent choice for your Christmas decorations:

  • Affordable: All you need is paper! You can use recycled paper, scrapbooking paper, or even old magazines to create your origami tree. This makes it a budget-friendly craft.
  • Eco-Friendly: By using recycled materials, you’re contributing to a more sustainable holiday celebration.
  • Personalized: You can choose the paper colors and patterns to match your decor and create a truly unique tree.
  • Therapeutic: The repetitive folding motions can be incredibly relaxing and meditative, making it a great way to de-stress during the busy holiday season.
  • Impressive Results: Despite its simplicity, the finished origami tree looks impressive and adds a touch of handcrafted elegance to any space.
  • Perfect for All Ages: Origami is a wonderful activity to enjoy with children, teens, and adults alike. It fosters creativity and fine motor skills.

Materials You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Paper: You’ll need multiple square sheets of paper in varying sizes. We will be making a modular origami tree, so you’ll be crafting multiple sections. For this guide, we will focus on a tree made with 5 sections with the following sizes. (Measurements are suggestions, and you can adjust according to your preferences. You can scale it up or down by simply increasing or decreasing these dimensions, but maintain square sheets.)
    • 5 squares of paper ( approximately 20cm x 20cm)
    • 5 squares of paper (approximately 17cm x 17cm)
    • 5 squares of paper (approximately 14cm x 14cm)
    • 5 squares of paper (approximately 11cm x 11cm)
    • 5 squares of paper (approximately 8cm x 8cm)

For a more traditional look, choose green paper. You can also experiment with other colors, patterns, and even metallic paper for a festive twist. Cardstock can also be used for a sturdier tree, but may be harder to fold, especially with the smaller sections.

  • Scissors (optional): To trim the paper if needed or to make precise folds.
  • Ruler (optional): To ensure the paper squares are even and for creasing.
  • Glue stick (optional) : For securing layers or the finished tree, if desired.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Creating the Origami Tree Sections

We will be creating five separate origami modules, and the size of these modules are dependent on the size of the paper you used. Once all sections are complete, we will assemble them to form a three dimensional Christmas Tree. Follow the same folding pattern to create each module, the only difference being the size of the square used for each module.

Here are the steps to create one module (Repeat for all 25 squares):

  1. Start with a Square: Place a square sheet of paper on a flat surface. Ensure that the paper is facing the side you would like to be on the outside of your tree.

  2. Fold in Half Diagonally: Fold the paper in half diagonally, bringing one corner to the opposite corner, creating a triangle. Crease firmly and unfold it.

    Diagonal Fold

  3. Fold in Half Diagonally (Opposite): Repeat this on the other set of corners, folding it in half diagonally, bringing the other corner to its opposite corner, creating an X in your paper. Crease firmly and unfold it.

    Second Diagonal Fold

  4. Fold in Half Vertically: Now, fold the paper in half, bringing the top edge to the bottom edge, making a rectangle. Crease firmly and unfold it.

    Horizontal Fold

  5. Fold in Half Horizontally: Repeat this on the other set of edges, folding it in half, bringing the left edge to the right edge. Crease firmly and unfold it.

    Vertical Fold

  6. Collapsing the shape: Now collapse the shape into a square by bringing the top and bottom points of the square towards the middle. You will now have a double layered square.

  7. Creating the triangle flaps: Starting with the open point of the double layered square, fold the top layers to the middle, bringing the side edges to the center crease to form a triangle. Crease firmly.

    Kite Fold

  8. Turn the model over and repeat: Turn the model over and repeat this fold on the other side. You should now have a diamond shape with triangle flaps on both sides.

  9. Fold in the Top Flaps: Now, fold the triangle flaps downwards, matching the top edge to the center crease. Crease firmly.

    Petal Fold Top

  10. Turn the model over and repeat: Turn the model over and repeat this fold on the other side.

    Petal Fold Bottom

  11. Shaping the module: Fold the model in half to reveal the two main points of the module. You may now lightly fold these two point towards one another, to form the 3D module.

    Finishing Module

Repeat these steps for all 25 squares of paper, creating 5 modules of each size.

Assembling the Origami Christmas Tree

Once you have created all five sets of modules, it’s time to assemble your origami Christmas tree. We will be starting with the largest modules at the base, and working our way up to the smallest modules at the top. This part is easier than the folding so dont worry!

  1. Starting the Base: Take one of the 5 largest modules. Locate the slit at the top. Insert the point of another largest module into this slit, gently sliding it in place. You will now have two modules interconnected.

  2. Continuing the Circle: Repeat this process with the remaining 3 largest modules to form a circle that serves as the base of your tree. Your largest modules should all be linked together, creating a 3D ring.

  3. Layering the next level: Now take the 5 modules of the second largest size. Locate the slit on one of the existing modules on the base and insert the point of one of the second largest modules. Insert the points of all 5 of the second largest modules into the existing ring. You should now have two rings in place. You will notice the second ring is significantly smaller than the base.

  4. Continue Layering: Repeat step 3 with the rest of your modules in decreasing sizes, working your way up the tree. The third layer will be smaller than the second, the forth will be smaller than the third, and finally the last one will be the smallest at the very top. You should end with a cone like structure, which resembles a Christmas tree.

  5. Finishing Touches (Optional): If you want your tree to be more sturdy, you can add a small dab of glue between the layers at this point to secure your final product. This step is not necessary as your tree should be relatively secure at this point. Now, your beautiful origami Christmas tree is complete!

Tips for Success

  • Precision is Key: Take your time when folding, making sure the creases are crisp and the edges align correctly.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: If you’re new to origami, don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t perfect. Keep practicing, and you’ll get the hang of it.
  • Paper Choice Matters: Thinner paper will be easier to fold, especially for beginners. Cardstock can create a sturdier tree but may be more challenging to manipulate. Experiment to find what works best for you.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment: Try using different colors, patterns, and even metallic paper to create a unique tree that reflects your personal style. You can add embellishments such as glitter, gems, or small stickers.
  • Use a Bone Folder: If you do a lot of paper craft, you might want to use a bone folder to create crisp folds that will enhance the appearance of your tree.
  • Watch Video Tutorials: If you’re finding the written instructions difficult to follow, there are many excellent video tutorials available online.

Displaying Your Origami Christmas Tree

Now that you’ve crafted your beautiful origami Christmas tree, it’s time to display it! Here are a few ideas:

  • Tabletop Decoration: Place it on your dining table, coffee table, or mantel for a festive centerpiece.
  • Office Decor: Bring a touch of holiday cheer to your workspace with your origami tree.
  • Gift Topper: Use a smaller version as a unique and personalized gift topper.
  • Window Display: Place it in your window to share the holiday spirit with your neighborhood.
  • Combine Several Trees: Create a mini-forest of origami Christmas trees in various colors and sizes for a truly magical display.
